Six schools within the Jackson County School System have been named Heart Safe Schools by Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Five schools (Maysville Elementary School, Heroes Elementary School, the Empower College & Career Center, East Jackson Middle School and South Jackson Elementary School) earned the distinction in July, with North Jackson Elementary School earning the honor this week. 

Jackson County High School had already earned the distinction in February, with Gum Springs Elementary School earning it in January and West Jackson Middle School earning it in July 2024. The distinction is good for two years. Several other JCSS schools are awaiting confirmation following an extensive application process.

A Heart Safe School distinction is awarded to schools through Project S.A.V.E., recognizing schools' commitment and preparation to respond in the event of a cardiac emergency. Upon successful implementation of the sudden cardiac arrest emergency program, and completion of established criteria, a school earned the honor of being recognized as a Heart Safe School.

Schools must identify a site coordinator to complete a Heart Safe School checklist, which includes ensuring a school site is prepared for a cardiac emergency. This includes establishing a response team of five to 10 individuals that will respond to a cardiac event, maintaining CPR and AED training and certifications and having written, established action steps. Schools must routinely train their staff, mark all AED locations and conduct emergency response drills.
