Too Sick For School

Is my child too sick for school?

A child should stay home if:

  • there is a fever of 100°F or greater in the past 24 hours.
  • vomiting and/or diarrhea occurred in the past 24 hours.
  • he/she is too sick to be comfortable at school.
  • he/she has a contagious illness/disease.
  • he/she has a frequent, persistent cough.
  • he/she has a persistent pain (stomach, ear, etc.) that will keep them from performing at school

A child should NOT return to school until fever, vomiting, and diarrhea has stopped for a full 24 hours without the help of medication.  If a child has been diagnosed by a physician (strep throat, pink eye, etc.) and is being treated with antibiotics, they may return to school 24 hours after the antibiotics have been started.
