March 29, 2018 – Message to parents from Dr. April Howard, Superintendent:
Thank you so much for your support as we continue to evaluate safety for our students and staff. In light of ongoing security reviews, we are making a change at all our schools that will have its biggest impact at the elementary level.
Beginning Monday, April 9, parents dropping off or picking up their children will do so from the school’s car-rider line or (if they want to park and walk in), at the building’s front door. We know this will be a change for children who are used to having their parents walk them to their classrooms, and we will work with them to make the adjustment as smooth as possible.
Research shows – and our own experience confirms – that arrival and departure times require increased attention to security. We appreciate you working with us to simplify the process so we can focus on safety. Limiting the number of non-staff adults in our buildings at the start and end of the school day is important.
We will continue to embrace a family-friendly environment in our schools. We welcome family engagement during the school day when our staff can more carefully monitor the flow of parents and community visitors. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we make this transition.
A copy of this message is being sent home with elementary school students today. Please share this with family and friends, particularly those with older students, so we can get the word out that the change will take place when we return from spring break.
